Our Story

All Earth Couture collections are made from organic cottons sourced from certified suppliers that adhere to strict global organic textile standards.

We use cotton plants that are grown without the use of any artificial fertiliers, insecticides or herbicides. All processes through ginning, spinning, knitting, dyeing and manufacturing of our garments are strictly supervised. We are certified by Control Union / Global Organic
Textile Standard (CU/GOTS) and hold an Organic Exchange certificate for most items.

Our focus on organic materials is complemented through in our packaging that is made from recycled paper, cardboard and plastics.

WHY MOSQUITO COILS?
Malaria is a continent-wide crisis - there are over 3000 deaths a day from malaria and malaria-related illnesses in Africa. Yet malaria-carrying mosquitoes can be effectively repelled by the use of a mosquito coil, a simple plant based insect repellent that protects families through the night. Such a simple solution.

MELENI BHARWANI - CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF EARTH COUTURE

Born in the United States Virgin Islands in 1981, Meleni Bharwani has been 'an organic girl' since the age of 16. For her Earth Couture is the culmination of a life-long dream and passion.

The concept for Earth Couture came to Meleni when she was sitting under a tree is West Africa with no access to water or electricity. She imagined bringing together her commitment to eco ideals with her interest in fashion.

The fashion connection dates to her early years when she worked for the family business designing jewels influenced by the tropical surroundings of the United Stated Virgin islands.

After studying at New York University, she moved to Lagos, Nigeria, in 2007 and opened a multi-brand designer boutique including names such as Stella McCartney, Lanvin and Diane von Furstenberg. It was in Nigeria that the seeds of her new concept were germinated and Meleni became inspired by the idea of creating eco-friendly and glamorous designs. In Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design in London Meleni completed a course in fashion design and marketing.

As a busy modern businesswoman always on the move, Meleni aimed to develop clothes that reflect a contrasting calm, environmental awareness and alluring appeal. And so Earth Couture was born; an eco statement that blends inspiring fashion with organic ideals.

Meleni's designs for Earth Couture combine freedom, comfort, glamour, sensuality, harmony and peace.

ETHICAL FOCUS, CERTIFICATION AND STANDARDS
With our timeless glamorous designs made with CU/GOTS (Control Union / Global Organic Textile Standard) certified organic cotton, we strive to work against throwaway fashion that ends up in landfills. Sourcing our materials by means that follow the Organic Exchange standards, our garments are designed and created to not only be more environmentally friendly and biodegradable but also more lovable.

BUSINESS STRUCTURE AND PRACTICES
We are a small family owned private limited company focused on employing and working with individuals who can benefit by working for Earth Couture. Our selected staff shares our passion for sustainable fashion and therefore add value to both their lives and our company.

Improving lives and supporting villages in Africa, each Earth Couture purchase donates mosquito coils to Itako in Lagos, Nigeria. Along with using organic and recycled materials, we are very particular with waste and try to recycle all unused produce to help our part in landfill reduction. We are also keen to help the environment by utilising natural sunshine instead of electricity.

SOURCING, SUPPLY CHAIN POLICIES AND FACTORIES
Striving against sweatshops and unfair working conditions, we visit each factory before proceeding to work with them. Currently we work with energy efficient factories in Turkey and India that have very favourable environments. Our organic materials are sourced following the Organic Exchange standards. Our Indigo collection is made in Nigerian villages that also help support traditional textile dying techniques.

If we source from China we make sure no sweatshops are used and that the workers have a favourable lifestyle and working environment.

By visiting our factories frequently we make sure our working environment is very favourable and that all our factory workers get tea breaks, sustainable salaries, lunch breaks, and of course bathroom breaks.

FAIR TRADE, CULTURE AND SKILLS
We are very particular in paying our staff fair and sustainable wages as to better their lives. The working conditions are very favourable and we pay according to current market prices. All our factories, packaging, and workers uphold respectable social and environmental standards.
